We’ve attended many callouts that were solved in seconds. Check these common issues before booking to see if you can fix the problem for free.
Check the Pressure: Ensure your gauge is between 1 and 1.5 bar. If it’s too low, your boiler won’t fire.
The Reset Button: It sounds simple, but a single reset can often clear temporary system faults.
Thermostat Batteries: If your screen is blank, a quick battery change could restore your heating instantly.
Power Supply: Ensure the boiler switch (usually near the unit) hasn’t been accidentally flicked off.
Some common, easy to fix issues we have faced
Radiators not getting hot enough
Radiators not as hot as they used to be?
Before calling out an engineer, try this simple trick: Check the control panel on your boiler. You will likely see two dials—one with a tap icon (for hot water) and one with a radiator icon (for your central heating).
Thermostat not turning heating on
Wireless Thermostat Not Connecting?
Before you book a repair, try this “Power Cycle” reset. Wireless thermostats often just need to re-sync their signal with the boiler.
Take your thermostat into the same room as the boiler. Locate the receiver (usually a small white box fixed to the wall next to the boiler).
Turn the heating “up” on the thermostat. Look for a light appearing on the receiver. If the light stays off and the boiler doesn’t fire, the signal is lost.
The Hard Reset: Turn the boiler off fully at the wall switch. Remove the batteries from the thermostat unit. Wait 30 seconds.
Turn the boiler power back on and re-insert the batteries. Try calling for heat again. Still no luck? Give us a call.
Water dripping from a pipe outside (blowoff)
Drip coming from a pipe outside?
If you see water dripping from a small pipe near your boiler on an external wall, your safety “blowoff” device has been activated. Here is a quick check that could solve it.
While this can signal a serious fault, it is often caused by a Filling Loop being left slightly open. This adds too much pressure to the system, forcing the boiler to discharge water safely outside.
How to check your Filling Loop:
- Locate the Handles: Find the black or blue lever handles on the silver pipe.
- Check the Position: The handles should be perpendicular (at a right angle) to the pipe when closed.
- The Fix: If a handle is pointing along the pipe, it’s open. Turn it 90 degrees to close it fully. This may stop the external drip once the pressure stabilizes.
Still dripping? If the handles are closed but the pipe still drips, the internal safety valve likely needs professional attention. Call us to get it sorted.
